Pravasi Bharatiya Sammelan: Guyana President Irfaan Ali thanks India and PM Modi for COVID support

President of Guyana Irfaan Ali has praised India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi for their contributions and aid to the world during the COVID-19 pandemic. Speaking at the 17th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas Convention in Indore on January 9, the President thanked the country and said that many owe the PM “a debt of gratitude.”

Ali also highlighted India’s vaccine assistance, calling it a show of “real love and hope.” “When the world couldn’t find a vaccine and you faced the challenge of COVID-19 pandemic, you showed the world what real love and hope is when you shared the vaccine with the rest of the world,” the President said.

The President went on to praise India’s efforts to assist other developing countries and said that when the world locked its borders and globalisation failed, India showed that globalisation could still succeed and there was still love in the hardest of times.

“It’s a significant day in the history of India,” Ali added. “On January 9, 1915, MK Gandhi returned to India from South Africa. On this day, 107 years ago, the once physically frail-looking but morally firm man returned and intensified the struggle for India’s independence.”

The Pravasi Bhartiya Sammelan conference is being held in Indore from January 8th to 10th after a two-year pause due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
