The first Tuluva queen of Ullal to engage in battle against the Portuguese was Rani Abbakka Chowta in the late 16th century.

She was a member of the Chowta dynasty, which reigned over some of India's coastal Karnataka. Puttige served as their capital.

Over the course of more than 40 years, Rani Abbakka repelled every Portuguese onslaught. She earned the name Abhaya Rani for her bravery (The fearless queen).

She opposed the collection of taxes by the Portuguese in her territory. She called upon everyone not to pay any tax to the invaders.

Rani Abbakka was one of the earliest freedom fighters who rebelled against foreign invaders and colonialism.
